REDUCE, REUSE and oh yeah…Recycle

Today is apparently Global Recycling Day - and while that sounds like a good thing, I don’t actually know enough about the initiative to say a resounding YAAAAAAY of support.

I’m torn about recycling, and favour reducing and reusing over this particular R. I mean, the statistic of 9% doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in recycling as a perfect (or even difference-making) solution. (“Canadians throw away over 3 million tonnes of plastic waste every year. Only 9% is recycled while the rest ends up in our landfills, waste-to-energy facilities or the environment.” From canada.ca.)

So how about making this pledge along with me: try to go heavy on the reduce and reuse part of the three Rs, and recycle as much as you can, of what you absolutely need to have. I think that’s something we can all put effort into, right?

Sometimes it makes more sense to buy things in a container that we can’t refill - it’s better for the budget and sometimes better for your use.

For instance, we give a bulk buy price break on bigger containers such as The Unscented Company - (hand soap seen here) in 4L or 10L boxes. You can recycle the cardboard (I have read statistics that between 25-68% of cardboard gets recycled), and the plastic bag inside the box. The 4L container removes 8 bottles from circulation, and the 10L accounts for 20 bottles. All in all, if this works better for you and your family or your business, then at least you’re doing what you can and making a thoughtful and well-considered purchase. On a special day to celebrate something that could be done much better or on any plain old day, that’s all we can ask for.

Ask about our bulk program for most of our refill products, if it works for you!
